A ‘shore’ thing – Chichester flood response

When recent flooding cut off an access route near Chichester, the Truck & Crane team proved that we’re never out of our depth.

Tasked by a client with a rapid-response solution to allow traffic to pass through whilst allowing water to drain away from the flooded area, we deployed a specialist fleet to get the job done.

Transport & installation

Efficiency was key to beat the rising tide. Using our versatile flat trailers, we transported 44 Temporary Vehicle Control Barriers (TVCBs) needed to form the backbone of the job.

Once on site, our rigid HIABs did the heavy lifting. Our skilled operators used the beavertails’ perfect combination of heavy load capacity and expert maneuverability to precision-place the TVCBs along the kerbline on either side of the road.

Drainage solution

The space between the two newly-installed retaining walls – some 3 metres apart – was filled with clean coarse loose stone, which allowed the abating floodwater to pass through freely.

We decked out the trafficked surface with TUFF TRAK – high-grip ground protection maps – to prevent any rutting or displacement of the aggregate, ensuring the surface stayed firm and reliable for all mixed goods and passenger vehicles needing safe passage.

The conditions were a challenge, but the Truck & Crane team helped ensure that the access route was reopened swiftly and safely.
