Willmott Dixon, the new ‘British Design Museum’ former Commonwealth Institute, Kensington High Street

A new client for whom we’d not worked with before had a problem with extremely tight access at the prestigious refurbishment at ‘The British Design Museum’ in Kensington High Street.

Due to site conditions beyond W.D’s control, 16 modular offices & hundreds of tonnes of material had to be delivered in by truck, up a  narrow 11 degree incline which ordinary transport solutions such as 6×2 & 8×2 HIAB rigids couldn’t touch.

We attended to look at possible plating solutions, but nothing practical could be achieved within the limitations of the site.

But never willing to give up, we remembered ‘Supertruck’, built by us specifically with a short wheelbase for just such tricky access. With some rapidly conceived and designed in house mods to the rear under-runs to cope with the departure angle & keep it FORS compliant, we swung our engineering team into action. In the end we had 2 x super-trucks plus a forklift in another yard in London to load out, delivering over a 3 month period, keeping the project on track until civil engineering arrangements could be made.

‘I would just like to say thank you for the help you have provided over the last few months. You really helped when we were in a tight spot. Can you also pass on my thanks onto your drivers too please…’
